This at least what I have experienced - The auto's 3rd gear is 1:1, and 4th is overdrive (.69:1). When it shifts out of 3rd, 4th does engage, but it is slipping. When it locks up, it's a pseudo-5th gear. I've paid close attention, and there are 4 shifts, for 5 'gears.' While I know there are really only 4, when 4th is engaged is can either be slipping (I think it's 10% slippage I read somewhere), then it locks up, and the revs drop by a few hundred. Plus, my auto still pulls darn hard at 120mph+ when it shifts into overdrive (3rd gear runs out at about ~117). If it were the actual .69:1 ratio, the pull wouldn't be nearly as hard. It'd be like a manual Z in 5th, but worse, the manual's OD is .75:1. So the slipping 4th gear is theoritically like .8x:1. My two cents Kez
"Pulled the blower fan down from behind the glovebox and there was a mouse nest inside the cage fan - mom and 6 babies. Mom was dead and the reason for the smell - petrifying fast - but the babies were hanging on. At least until I fed them to the cats." [ZXtaZTT - June 19, 2002] |
